I take my teeth very seriously. As someone with a family history of wonky teeth, I was pushed down the orthodontia path at a very young age. I was in first grade when spacers were cemented on both the top and bottom of my mouth — foreshadowing for a seven-year-long process that would involve retainers, oral surgery, braces, and another set of retainers.

As a kid, I absolutely hated it. I would lie in bed at night and run my tongue over whatever hardware was in my mouth at the time, dreaming about the day when I'd be rid of anything metal or plastic. Before I had my braces put on at age twelve, I had four of my permanent teeth surgically removed; not my wisdom teeth, but my secondary set of canines. My mouth was too small for them, and my crooked smile needed the space. (Wisdom teeth removal came later.)

To put it shortly, I've had a lot of work done on my smile to get it where it is today. The braces came off after two years, the day before my eighth grade school picture was taken. And after the long, grueling process, my teeth are finally straight. I'd never whitened them before, or really done anything except brush, floss, and attend a yearly cleaning. When Smile Brilliant reached out to me about collaborating, I was excited at the prospect of having a whiter smile. I didn't spend all that time in braces let my teeth become stained, right?

I'm also a coffee drinker. I love having a warm cup in the morning, and then I'm set for the day. However, I'd noticed that this habit was starting to take its toll; my teeth weren't as white as they used to be. And since I'm starting a new job, I wanted to make a great first impression.

smile brilliant whitening process

This was the first time I'd ever seriously tried whitening my teeth; I experimented with my dad's whitening strips once, but I didn't like the way they felt. Smile Brilliant's process made everything relatively easy for me. To start off, the brand sends you an impressions and whitening kit. The first step is to mix the putty together and take impressions of your teeth (top and bottom, obviously). The impressions are then sent back to Smile Brilliant's lab, using a prepaid mailing envelope included in the kit. The impressions are used to make custom whitening trays, which are then mailed back to you about a week or two later.

Now comes the main event. Each whitening kit comes with pre-filled whitening and desensitizing gels, which are packaged in syringes for ultimate convenience. It's nearly impossible for this stuff to make a mess in the bathroom. My teeth are a little sensitive, I wore my trays for about forty-five minutes after filling them with whitening gel, and whitened every other day. (Though I did have to work around being out of town, so it was not as consistent as I'd wanted.) Smile Brilliant's instructions say that you can whiten for up to three hours, but forty-five minutes was all I could tolerate. After years of wearing retainers, it's hard for me to put something on my teeth or in my mouth for an extended amount of time.

Overall, the process was pretty painless. It was easy to work into my evening routines, and whitening with gel was surprisingly mess-free. You can see the before and after below! There’s about four weeks between the two photos.

I'm also partnering with Smile Brilliant to give $149 worth of credit to their site! The giveaway is open to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.
